After reading the entire article from The Athletic about Russell Wilson’s end with the Seahawks and his awful beginning with the Broncos, I can only come to one conclusion.
It isn’t through a lack of preparation or effort that Wilson doesn’t seem to be an elite QB anymore. It seems his body isn’t catching up to what his mind wants him to do.
That is a problem with all athletes as they get later in their careers (unless you are LeBron). The report states that Wilson while being a diva, which isn’t unusual for the QB of an NFL team, works as hard as anyone in the building and truly believes he can win more Super Bowls.
The problem is that he needs a coach like Carroll to rein him in. Nathanial Hackett let him run wild, and you saw the results. The question is can Sean Payton do any better? He surely can’t do any worse.
Wilson and Carroll had clashed in recent years over the quarterback’s role in the offense and the overall direction of a team that had gradually declined after back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Convinced that Carroll and Schneider were inhibiting his quest to win additional Super Bowls and individual awards, Wilson asked Seahawks ownership to fire both of them, according to league sources who spoke to The Athletic on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the details. Wilson also had a preferred replacement in mind: Sean Payton, who had recently stepped down from the New Orleans Saints.
The Seahawks did the right thing because they made the playoffs with Geno Smith, and the Broncos were a disaster with Wilson. Wilson got Payton as his head coach in the end, but we will see if that changes anything.
Wilson has denied trying to get Carroll fired on Twitter.
Only a few people know if he is lying or not.
