There is uproar on the socials and among parents following images of racist drawings being sent to black elementary school children in California by their classmates. What’s happening in the States?
Will racism ever end? The Daily Mail got the details;
Racist drawings given to black students at a Southern California elementary school have prompted one parent to pull their child from the institution.
Sketches containing pictures of a stick figure being lynched and messages reading ‘you’re my favorite monkey’ and ‘to my favorite cotton picker’ were given to one young student by her fellow classmates.
The mother of the girl who received the drawings told KTLA she will no longer allow her daughter to attend Pepper Tree Elementary School in Upland, California after continued harassment.
The parents of a second girl who has encountered similar racism say their three children, all who attend Pepper Tree, have gone mostly unaddressed.
Upland Unified School District’s superintendent said in a statement this week the drawings are under investigation at this time.
The shocking drawings given to the child show a large brown monkey on one side of a card accompanied by the message ‘you’re my favorite monkey.’ One of the other cards shows a landscape with white pieces of cotton in the air surrounded with the words ‘to my favorite cotton picker.’ Maylana and Rome Douglas are the parents of the three children at Pepper Tree Elementary, one who was told they would also get a picture of a lynching.
‘They said that they were going to give her (a drawing) that specifically said, “You’re my favorite slave,” and they were going to show her as a slave hanging from a tree,’ Maylana said.
One drawing showed a picture of a black stick figure hanging from trees.
Another card given to one black student shows a stick figure holding a sign that states ‘no more picking cotton.As shocking as the drawings are, parents say it’s not the first time students have experienced racism in the district.
