During the LA press conference, Gervonta Davis made a point to speak on how Ryan Garcia is a limited fighter with only a big left hook.
Implying if you can neutralize his best punch, he becomes an ordinary fighter.
This isn’t new in boxing. The best fighters can beat you in multiple ways, but for the most part, all fighters have what people like to call a money punch.
This is where the sweet science begins when it comes to boxing. Davis has shown the ability to hurt opponents with a lot of different punches, but his uppercut is what puts people to sleep just ask Leo Santa Cruz.
Garcia’s left hook is so fast that there have been times he has knocked people out or down and you had to use slow motion replay to see the actual punch land.
No matter how good of defensive fighter you are, you are going to get hit. The key is not to get hit flush and not to get hit with something you don’t see coming.
If we are to take Davis’ thoughts on Garcia at face value then we have what we like to call a Deontay Wilder situation. Where you know what is coming, but that doesn’t mean you can stop it.
Tyson Fury knew exactly what Wilder was trying to do and still he was knocked down four times in their three times.
So, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing to have a money punch if no one can stop it. One of Tank’s strengths is his ability to assess the threat of his opponent in the ring and adjust accordingly.
With opponents like Rolly Romero and Issac Cruz he boxed more because he knew they had power, but with someone like Mario Barrios he was more willing to walk through the fire to get to his target.
Davis has a high boxing IQ, so don’t be shocked if tries to set traps on Garcia, but IF Ryan lands his left we will know for sure what type of chin Davis really has.
