Saturday night saw one of the biggest boxing matches of the year when Gervonta Davis took on Ryan Garcia.
There was a lot of talk surrounding the fight that led to it being more exciting, but in the end, Davis’ experience took over, and he delivered a 7th-round knockout after landing a vicious shot to Garcia’s body.
Before the fight, Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter, talked a lot about his fighter and how he would be Davis. Still, after the fight, he was nowhere to be found at the post-fight press conference, for which he took a lot of criticism.
It turns out, according to him, he was told by security to leave after he received death threats.
In a video he posted, he congratulated Davis and said he was proud of Garcia but that he and Bernard Hopkins were advised to leave. He also said that Hopkins was accused of having testosterone cream on his hands at the weigh-in and trying to touch Davis. That caused him to get banned from everything. He ended by saying he and Golden Boy have Ryan’s back.
Here is why none of this makes sense.
The post-fight press conference was in the ring, and Ryan Garcia got a police escort back to his locker room and police escort back to the ring for the presser.
At no time would Oscar have been in any more danger than Ryan or any of us in the media.
If Oscar was in fear for his life, why did he come to the fight to begin? Furthermore, his fighter lost, so why would fans or anyone be upset with Oscar?
It is a feeble excuse and different from the ones floating around.
Oscar De La Hoya says his security advised him to leave Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia after he received death threats as he explains why he and Bernard Hopkins did not attend the post-fight press conference…
