Nick Bosa and the San Francisco 49ers’ long-term contract troubles continue.
The 25-year-old NFL star was looming towards the end of his 5-year rookie deal, as such, he and his agent presented a long-term contract to the 49ers. This a deal that is considered the largest in 49ers history and the biggest deal in NFL defensive player’s history, and as expected, the 49ers are not giving in easily.
The team started their 2023 season’s training over the past few days, and Bosa has refused to make an appearance due to the holdup in the contract. The team’s General Manager, John Lynch, has confirmed that Bosa’s absence is no surprise to him, and he didn’t expect to even see him. They are ready to risk it all.
Another NFL star is holding out with the hopes that it’ll culminate in a contract extension.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, San Francisco 49ers’ general manager John Lynch stated that the club doesn’t expect Nick Bosa to be with the club as they enter the early stages of 2023 training camp. Bosa appears to be planning to hold out until a new deal is reached.
The reigning Defensive Player of the Year is entering the final season of his rookie contract; the 49ers picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal last offseason which guarantees him $17.859 million for 2023.
Elsewhere around the NFL, Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive tackle Chris Jones and Las Vegas Raiders’ running back Josh Jacobs are also holding out with their respective clubs. Jones has one year left on his deal, while Jacobs and the Raiders were unable to reach an extension after the club placed the franchise tag on him.

After five straight non-playoff seasons (2014 to 2018), the 49ers have emerged as a powerhouse under Bosa. They’ve played in three of the last four NFC Championship Games (2019, 2021 and 2022) and went all the way to Super Bowl 54, where they dropped a heartbreaker to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Through his first four seasons, Bosa has racked up 43 sacks (including a league-leading 18.5 last season) and two forced fumbles.

While any other player will be sanctioned to pay a $40,000 fine for missing training, Bosa is excluded because he is in his fifth year. While he is free to skip training, he will surely show up to play in the matches in the coming season.
