Broncos Safety Justin Simmons Is Listed as Having a Hip Injury and Misses Practice

One of its star players wasn’t on the pitch as the Denver Broncos started their Week 3 preparations for the Miami Dolphins. According to the team’s injury report on Wednesday, safety Justin Simmons missed practice due to what appears to be a hip problem.

Sean Payton confirmed the inevitable,

“He didn’t practice today,” “He’s working and rehabbing.”

Simmons has suffered two injuries in as many months; the first, a tweaked groin, forced him to miss the majority of training camp and the whole preseason. Payton was typically mum about the circumstances surrounding his hip injury.

He made a full recovery in time for Week 1 and participated in all 73 defensive snaps of the team’s defeat to Washington last Sunday, leading the team with 10 total tackles. The three-time All-Pro is presently ranked 74th among 79 eligible safety players by Pro Football Focus.

Delarrin Turner-Yell would be the backup if Simmons is unable to face the Dolphins, whose dynamic offence leads the league in passing yards and total yards with an average of 30.0 points per game. Caden Sterns is out for the season and PJ Locke is still on injured reserve.

Outside linebacker Frank Clark (hip) and defensive lineman Mike Purcell (ankle) both missed practice, and left tackle Garett Bolles (ankle) was a limited participant, according to the injury report.
