Despite having a sluggish offensive that has averaged the fourth-fewest points per game (just 15.9), the Pittsburgh Steelers begin Week 6 with a 3-2 record.
Fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers have repeatedly urged head coach Mike Tomlin to dismiss offensive coordinator Matt Canada going all the way back to last season. Tomlin may be forced to make changes if the offense doesn’t soon start to regain its groove.
Recently, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Steelers reporter Gerry Dulac was questioned about a prospective successor to Canada as offensive coordinator. Dulac suggested Jon Gruden, a former head coach who won a Super Bowl and was close to Tomlin:
“Way too early to speculate. But a good one would be a Tomlin friend — Jon Gruden..”
From 1998 to 2001, Gruden served as the Oakland Raiders’ head coach. From 2002 to 2008, he served as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach. After his resignation in the middle of the 2021 season, he returned to coaching the Raiders in 2018. However, emails showing him using homophobic, misogynistic, and racial language were exposed.

If the Steelers decided to rehire Gruden, who is now serving as an advisor to the New Orleans Saints, there would be a lot of negative publicity. Of course, it’s unclear at this point whether Pittsburgh believes Gruden to be their best option for the OC role.
