In a Furious Outburst, an NFL Owner Destroys an ESPN Reporter and Labels Her “Ugly and Mean”

Recently, Bryant Gumbel and HBO’s Real Sports featured a feature on Jim Irsay, the owner of the Colts. In one segment of the conversation, Irsay discussed his battle with alcoholism and addiction with correspondent Andrea Kremer. He also talked about his notorious arrest in 2014 on suspicion of operating a vehicle while inebriated.

He said that being “prejudiced against” for being a “rich, white billionaire” was a contributing factor in his detention.

Irsay’s remarks generated a lot of discussion in the sports community and led to a segment on ESPN’s First Take where Molly Qerim, Kimberley A. Martin, and Stephen A. Smith chastised the Colts owner.

“His comments exemplify exactly what people think NFL owners are—detached,” said Martin. “Just a total lack of awareness of their privilege. And the flippancy of how they discuss their privilege.”

Irsay replied on social media, saying he would be suing First Take. He even went so far as to accuse Martin directly.

“If my Black Mother Dorthy was still alive..you’d be in some big Hot Water! You are mean and ugly.”

Irsay added on Wednesday that “Real Sports” and “Bryan Gumbel” had treated him with “mean-spirited contempt”.  To put it mildly, we’re in for an intriguing Thursday for First Take.

Taking jabs at a reporter personally will undoubtedly make Stephen A. Smith take offense. We’ll have to wait and see if Martin responds to being hauled by an NFL owner even more forcefully.
