REPORT : QB Who Won 2 Super Bowls Is Likely to Be Released in the Offseason

A two-time Super Bowl champion and seasoned NFL quarterback will be released this summer.

It would be an understatement to say that the Las Vegas Raiders‘ three-year, $72.75 million investment in Jimmy Garoppolo hasn’t yielded much. Due to injuries, Garoppolo has already missed two games. Last week, youngster Aidan O’Connell took over as starting quarterback.

It is “very” likely that the Raiders will cut their losses and cut Garoppolo in the summer, according to Raiders ESPN writer Paul Gutierrez:

“How about … very? Benching Garoppolo as part of the reset that saw coach Josh McDaniels, general manager Dave Ziegler and offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi all get fired does not bode well for the QB’s future in Las Vegas. He threw nine interceptions over six games but seven touchdown passes. Then again, it all depends upon how well rookie Aidan O’Connell and the Raiders play in Garoppolo’s absence. Interim coach Antonio Pierce also said we probably haven’t seen the last of Garoppolo this season.

A lot of factors are still at play in determining whether the Raiders need to search for a franchise QB in the 2024 draft, where ESPN’s Football Power Index is projecting them to pick at No. 6. — Paul Gutierrez, Raiders reporter.”

Throughout the season, the 32-year-old Garoppolo has completed 65.5 percent of his ball attempts for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions. With Davante Adams, Josh Jacobs, and Jakobi Meyers as his solid supporting cast, Garoppolo’s troubles have been particularly discouraging.

After losing on the road to the Detroit Lions in Week 8, the Raiders fired General Manager Dave Ziegler and Head Coach Josh McDaniels. Antonio Pierce and Champ Kelly took the places of McDaniels and Ziegler, respectively.
