Alexander Vollanovski will defend his featherweight title against Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 in February 2020 after getting knocked out by 155 lbs champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 294. Following the second failed attempt at the lightweight strap, Volkanovski has returned to his natural weight category.
That said, the Australian fighter is willing to move up to any weight category for a potential clash against Conor McGregor. In a recent interaction with ‘Who The Fook Are These Guys’, ‘The Great’ addressed several things around his UFC career and chances of facing ‘Notorious’.
Alexander Volkanovski said, “There’s a storyline there. We have both beaten all other featherweight champions, but I haven’t beat him and I want that.”
“I will move up, I will fight him at 80 kg, I will fight him at whatever [weight class] it is. It’s a big fight, a fun fight, a legacy fight, an exciting fight. Money fight.”
Both- Volkanovski and McGregor have held the undisputed featherweight titles. Meanwhile, McGregor remains the ony featherweight champion in UFC who had a successful attempt at the 155 lbs strap.
During his time as the 145 lbs champion, Max Holloway fell short of earning the Interim 155 lbs title against Dustin Poirier at UFC 238. Alexander Volkanovski failed to earn the lightweight title twice against Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 and UFC 294 respectively.
Only Conor McGregor succeeded when he knocked the lightweight title out of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 and became the first UFC champion two hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously.
