The Los Angeles Lakers’ black alternative “city edition” uniforms have become symbolic of success for the team. Sporting an undefeated record while donning the dark colors, the Lakers secured a place in the semifinals of the NBA’s in-season tournament with a 106-103 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.
Los Angeles Lakers Barred from Wearing Black Uniforms in Semifinals of In-Season Tournament
The players have embraced the aesthetic and express a strong preference for continuing to wear the black ensemble in their upcoming semifinal against the New Orleans Pelicans. However, sources have revealed that the NBA has different plans for the Lakers’ wardrobe.
According to the Lakers’ uniform schedule on the team’s website, they are slated to wear their gold “icon” jerseys, while the Pelicans will be in their white “association” uniforms. The league has made this decision due to concerns over the visual contrast between the jerseys and the specialized in-season tournament court at T-Mobile Arena, where the semifinals will take place.
This news disappointed Lakers players, with one responding, “That’s a**,” upon learning they would not be allowed to wear their black uniforms for the crucial matchup. The black ensemble has become more than just a uniform choice for the players. Rui Hachimura, returning from injury, wore a black protective face mask, and LeBron James made a fashion statement by donning an all-black outfit, complete with black Louis Vuitton sunglasses, for the game against the Suns.
James, in particular, has had a history of success in black alternative uniforms. During the 2020 NBA bubble, his Lakers went 4-1 while wearing “Black Mamba” uniforms in honor of the late Kobe Bryant, ultimately winning the championship. Additionally, during the 2016 Finals, James’ Cleveland Cavaliers wore black uniforms for their road victories in Game 5 and the title-clinching Game 7.
While some may view the choice of uniforms as trivial, James, a fan of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders, believes in the impact of looking good on performance. He once stated, “When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you play good.” This philosophy resonates with him and has influenced his approach to fashion since childhood.
With a significant $500,000 cash prize per player at stake for the winners of the in-season tournament, it is understandable why the Lakers place importance on their appearance. Despite their desire to wear the black uniforms, the team will have to settle for their gold jerseys in the upcoming semifinals.

As the Lakers face the Pelicans in a crucial matchup, they will aim to continue their winning ways, even if they can’t do it in their favored black uniforms.
