Should quarterback Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys ask to be traded to the Atlanta Falcons? On Wednesday, ESPN commentator Jeff Saturday advocated for that. For the 2024 season, the Atlanta Falcons are actively searching for a new head coach and (probably) a new quarterback. Securing the starting quarterback of the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys is one way to get Atlanta fans excited.
Seem unrealistic? Perhaps, but on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Wednesday, there was some discussion about that possible move.
Jeff Saturday and Mike Greenberg discuss Dak Prescott
Host Mike Greenberg started the topic by talking about Prescott’s present leverage with the Cowboys. Analyst Jeff Saturday then took the conversation to a new level by bringing up the Falcons.
Greenberg said,
“No one has ever had the leverage that Dak Prescott has,” “His cap hit next season is $59 million, and that’s the last year of his deal. He has a no franchise tag clause, he has final authority on all trades. Has total control in a way that no football player ever has, including people who are free agents.” “They don’t get to set their own market. His is already set at $59 million. So Dak needs to talk into Jerry Jones’ office and say, ‘This is where I want to go. Trade me there now.’ And, Jeff, you know exactly where that should be.”
Saturday replied,
“The Atlanta Falcons,” “Go in there with the papers today. You have plenty of talent. Hopefully, Bill Belichick is going to be the coach, or someone is going to be in there to turn it. They play good on defense, they have weapons on offense, and you’re talking about a guy who’s going to walk in and command that type of energy.”
Prescott’s arrival would undoubtedly address the Falcons‘ quarterback issue. Dak passed for more than 4,500 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in the 2023 regular season, despite the Cowboys’ unceremoniously early elimination from the playoffs in the Wild Card round this year.
Once more, this could be overly ambitious, but why not go all the way and sign the quarterback from “America’s Team” if the Falcons want to “swing for the fences”?
