Star quarterback Chad Kelly and the CFL team are being sued by a former strength and conditioning coach of the Toronto Argonauts for wrongful termination and alleged violations of the Ontario Human Rights Code.
The complainant claims in a statement of claim submitted on Wednesday to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice that Kelly persistently harassed her, beginning with unsolicited amorous advances and progressing to instances when Kelly threatened her.
Kelly’s actions were reported to the Argonauts, but she said they did nothing. She also quoted assistant general manager John Murphy as saying Kelly “opened a can of worms that didn’t need to be opened.”
What next for Chad Kelly ?
The complainant claimed that on January 29, she was informed that her contract would not be extended. She said that after joining the Argonauts in 2018, her contract has been continuously extended.
The plaintiff is requesting $85,714 from the Argonauts and $80,000 from Kelly. Unless given consent, the names of people who are accused of being harassed or sexually assaulted are not published by the Canadian Press.
The claims have not been put to the test in court. As for Kelly’s representative, she has not yet replied to a request for comment. The Argonauts and the CFL stated they were aware of the complaint but would not comment directly on the accusations.
