As was to be expected given their recent offseason purchase of a superstar, the Milwaukee Bucks are enjoying a fantastic season. However, Damian Lillard‘s role on the team remains somewhat unclear, especially when it comes to defense, so things haven’t always been easy for the Bucks during the season. After living in Portland for 11 years, Lillard joined the Bucks this season.
Many pundits believed that Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard would dominate the league with their pick-and-roll at the beginning of the season.
However, things haven’t exactly gone as planned; the Bucks are presently 11 games behind the Boston Celtics, who lead the league. Throughout the season, Lillard’s output has also declined; currently, the former star of the Trail Blazers is averaging 24.4 points on 42% shooting. The Bucks guard is shooting less than (36.1%) of his career average (37.1%), indicating that even Dame’s three-point shooting has suffered.
Bill Simmons talks about Damian Lillard’s wages
Bill Simmons, the CEO and founder of The Ringer, recently spoke about the Damian Lillard situation on his show. While discussing the financial aspects of Lillard’s pay with the Bucks, Simmons informed his fellow hosts: “I hope he doesn’t make a diss track about me. Damian Lillard, it’s just too much money. This and the next three, he is owed $207.3 million. He’s gonna be 37 years old getting a paycheck that starts with a “6” for the year.”
“Not positive but his best years might be behind him,”
The media personality did acknowledge, though, that Dame’s market value will be heavily influenced by his performance with the Bucks this postseason. Simmons thought the 33-year-old’s contract was still excessive, though.
The Bucks acquired Lillard on September 27, 2023. Despite having recently joined the Bucks, Lillard’s previous contract made him the highest paid player on the squad. According to Spotrac, Lillard is eligible for a $45.6 million contract this year, with a $48.7 million payment the next year.
With three years remaining on his deal and the possibility of being one of the oldest players to get a $47 million contract, Simmons has good reason to be concerned.
