Ever imagined hitting the jackpot with a $2 bet on FanDuel, only to receive an email stating they’re snatching back your $1.5K winnings? Well, buckle up for a jaw-dropping tale that will leave you questioning your luck and sanity. Imagine the perplexity of a bettor thinking they’ve struck gold, only to have it vanish quicker than ice cream on a scorching day. This unbelievable scenario is straight out of a comedy sketch, but sadly, it’s someone’s harsh reality. This is funny!
Garnishment is a legal process where a creditor seizes a portion of a person’s assets to settle a debt. It can be initiated for various reasons, such as unpaid loans, child support, or in this case, gambling debts. The process involves the court ordering the seizure of funds from the individual’s bank account or paycheck.
The alleged screenshot has been doing the rounds on X/Twitter and Instagram this week, although the origins are not clear.
From what we can see, it includes a supposed email from the sportsbook letting a bettor know that the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services’ Child Support Enforcement branch notified them of “an open child support debt.”
The user apparently won $1580.84 off a $2 wager, per one of the images shown below. However, FanDuel sent him an email to inform him that the sum of $1,578.84 had been debited from his account for child support purposes.
While we can’t be sure that the claims above are real, child support is covered under FanDuel’s user policy. The section of the site’s ‘Responsible Play Guide’ clearly notes that third-party exclusion or play restriction requests for a user “can be made by requestors who provide proof” that the individual is, for example, “subject to a court order requiring him or her to pay unmet child support obligations.”
The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services announced its first interception of casino winnings for a child support payment in 2011. It occurred just two days after the launch of a pilot program. A state law was passed a year later which makes any winnings above $1,200 subject to such debt collection.
It’s shocking knowing that a $2 bet can stir up a legal storm. The bettor’s rollercoaster of emotions serves as a cautionary tale – always read the fine print before placing your bets! FanDuel’s policy on garnishment may seem harsh, but it’s all about playing by the rules to avoid surprises like this one.
