On the “The Rush” podcast, Julian Edelman recently related a humorous story about practicing with the late, great quarterback Tom Brady. Brady compared Edelman to a weary, tongue-out golden puppy while having him run routes nonstop.
To start the conversation, Edelman disclosed that Tom Brady will continue to train with top receivers like Wes Welker and Randy Moss in Los Angeles. Fortunately, Edelman and Brady had the same agent, which inspired him to try to smuggle himself into those highly sought-after practice sessions. Though it did need some perseverance at first, the WR was able to participate approximately five weeks following his relocation to Los Angeles.
“I go and we were running, and he ran me like a dog. Like, we ran 70 routes, two-minute drill style, where he would be out there and he’d say, ‘you’re the F, zero out, slot fing, ride 134, F Bo Ice’ and we’d go the whole length of the field. 10 routes in a row.” Julian added.
Julian Edelman speaks of Tom Brady’s workout
Driven by the chance to Train with Tom Brady, Julian Edelman gave it his all throughout those demanding 10-route series. It’s interesting to note that he once believed the practice was ended after making a catch in the end zone. But Brady called a play and made him run three more times instead of just once. At the end, Julien even expressed his feelings, saying,
“I was panting like a golden retriever chasing balls, I’m like dying.”
Edelman was tired by the time they arrived at about sixteen routes. But Brady, the rival, put him to the test once more, asking, “What, you want to f***ing get off the field?”
It was simply amazing how Tom Brady could challenge his colleagues. The guys may have been panting like dogs from the quarterback’s intense sessions, but it surely raised their game to a new level.
