Although Paul George‘s decision to leave the Los Angeles Clippers was unexpected, he accepted an offer from the 76ers. George’s father was profoundly affected by the fact that they not only complied with his requests, which included a four-year deal at a maximum of $212 million, but also demonstrated the value of his skills by involving Julius Erving in the discussions.
Paul’s father talked about how he is still completely star struck when talking about the occasion when the Sixers brought out the great Erving for the pitch meeting during his appearance on “Podcast P.”
“Of course, it was like me meeting Superman. I mean, back in the day, Dr. J was the man. I don’t care how you look at it, when talking basketball, he was the man… So when I seen him in person, I was like man, you just don’t know. You was my man.”
He mentioned how well-known Dr. J was in his basketball period. Dr. J had a significant impact on basketball in a similar way to how Allen Iverson did in the 2000s and Stephen Curry did in the 2010s. “Everyone had fros back then, so you step on the court and everybody is Dr. J,” he revealed.
Paul George’s father speaks about how he felt when Dr. J wanted to have his son
George Sr. spoke of how humbled he felt to hear Dr. J. express his strong desire for his son to play basketball with the Sixers. He went so far as to draw parallels between George and his professional background.
“He started talking about how before he got his championship, he was missing that ‘missing piece’ and once he got it he won. Then he stated to Paul that he is our missing piece, and I was just like wow, that’s coming from Dr. J.”
Joel Embiid’s 76ers have not advanced past the second round throughout his tenure. The All-Star turned into an ideal backup option for the MVP center. George, though, provided a different two-way scoring option that will take some of the load off of Philly’s two studs.
The Celtics, Knicks, and Bucks are three of the best teams in the Eastern Conference that will face off for an NBA championship. Though George and his father think this is the ideal opportunity to finally go over the hump, the Sixers are not to be taken lightly.
