Undisputed Boxing Review: Was it Worth the Wait?

Before we get into the review, the most important question must be answered.

Is the game fun?

YES!!!!

“Undisputed” is a boxing video game that has made a significant impact in the sports gaming world, particularly for fans of boxing. Developed by Steel City Interactive, this game brings a refreshing level of realism and depth to the genre, making it stand out as a top choice for boxing enthusiasts. It provides an experience that is quite different from earlier boxing games, such as the “Fight Night” series, aiming to recreate the technicality and strategy of real-world boxing.

Graphics & Presentation

Visually, “Undisputed” is impressive. The boxers are meticulously detailed, from their facial expressions to their physiques, and even down to the realistic sweat and blood effects. The arenas are crafted with authenticity, and the overall lighting gives it a realistic, broadcast-quality feel. Each punch, block, and movement is fluid, enhancing the immersion as you engage in one-on-one matches.  Visually, the game is beautiful.

Gameplay

One of the major strengths of “Undisputed” is its emphasis on simulation over arcade-style gameplay. Every punch, dodge, and counter must be strategically timed, making this game a true test of boxing knowledge and skill. Unlike other boxing titles, it focuses heavily on stamina, footwork, and the variety of punches (jabs, hooks, uppercuts). Players need to manage their boxer’s energy and adapt to their opponent’s fighting style. Button-mashing won’t get you far here, and the depth of controls offers an authentic boxing experience.

The inclusion of different styles of fighters, from technical boxers to power punchers, adds variety to the gameplay. Moreover, the game introduces a dynamic damage system, meaning that repeatedly targeting an opponent’s weak spot can lead to cuts, swelling, and potential stoppages due to injury.

One suggestion would be to get comfortable using the buttons to punch over the analog stick. You can throw punches and combinations much faster with the buttons than with the stick.

If you try to play rock ’em and sock ’em, you will pay. As your punches slow down, a nicely time counter shot will put you down.   I do believe that too often fighters get up from heavy knockdowns, but that is a minor critique

Loose foot movement lets you box in a way that you never have been and allows punches to be thrown at various angles depending on where you are moving.

One negative is that, at times, everything feels sluggish, even in the early rounds when you should have the most stamina.  Also, with some fighters, you can spam certain punches unnaturally. But overall, you do have to think in the ring, and even if you feel you are comfortably ahead, everything can change with one punch.

Modes and Features

The game offers a variety of modes, including career mode, quick play, and online multiplayer. Career mode allows players to create a boxer, train, and rise through the ranks of the boxing world. Online modes have been praised for their matchmaking system and smooth gameplay, which is essential for a competitive experience.

Another feature that stands out is the wide roster of boxers. “Undisputed” includes legendary fighters like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and modern champions such as Tyson Fury and Canelo Álvarez. The variety of weight classes ensures you can have matches that suit different playstyles, whether you prefer heavy-hitting heavyweights or nimble lightweights.

Realism and Challenges

While “Undisputed” excels in realism, it may not appeal to casual players looking for a fast-paced, arcade-style experience. The learning curve is steep, requiring players to understand boxing tactics, combinations, and defensive strategies to excel. This commitment to realism is both a strength and a potential drawback, depending on the player’s expectations.

Conclusion

It has been a long journey from Fight Night Champion to Undisputed and while there are a lot of things that need to be improved, it is a very fine boxing game for those of us who love the sweet science
