Talk about a genius escape plan! This 20-year-old French prisoner outsmarted everyone by hiding in his “freed” cellmate’s laundry bag. Like, who even thinks of that?
So apparently, this prisoner’s cellmate was getting released and his laundry bag was being taken out of the prison, like usual. But instead of just letting the guard take it away, our crafty prisoner decided to sneak inside the bag and hitch a ride out of there. Talk about thinking on your feet!
And guess what? It worked! The guard totally thought the bag was just full of dirty laundry and didn’t even bother checking. Next thing you know, he is free as a bird and probably laughing all the way to the nearest hideout.
Sébastien Cauwel, director of France’s prison administration, told CNN affiliate BFMTV Sunday that the man “took advantage” of the release of his fellow inmate to escape from the Corbas prison near Lyon, a city in the country’s southeast.
But Lyon’s prosecutor’s office told CNN the prisoner’s short-lived escape came to an end Monday morning, when he was arrested in Sathonay-Camp, a city on the outskirts of Lyon.
“The man who escaped from Corbas remand center was arrested this morning around 6:00 a.m., leaving a cellar in Sathonay Camp,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. “No one was injured. His accomplice was not with him and has not yet been arrested.”
“The suspect is currently in custody on charges of escape as part of an organized gang and participation in a criminal conspiracy,” it added.
Cauwel told the broadcaster that prison officials had noticed on Saturday morning that the man had escaped. He acknowledged an “accumulation of errors,” noting that an investigation into the incident had been opened.
“This is an extremely rare event that we have never seen in this administration and which clearly shows a whole series of serious failures,” Cauwel said, noting that the Corbas prison is overcrowded.
The inmate who escaped was serving several sentences, France’s prison service said in a statement cited by European news agency AFP. He was also under investigation in a case connected to organized crime, AFP reported, citing an unnamed source close to the matter.
Honestly, you got to give him his flowers for his quick thinking and guts – that’s one heck of an escape story right there!
