Patrick Beverly was shocked to hear about Karl Malone‘s off-court history of impregnating a 13-year-old girl. Like, what in the world? It’s insane to think that someone with such a public image could have something like that in their past.
At around the 1-hour-15-minute mark of the latest episode of The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone, the two hosts were discussing their lineup for the best team of all-time when Ferrone asked Beverley how he feels about Karl Malone being included on a team like this. “I mean, I think he’s top 20 greatest players to play,” replied Beverley.
“But what about his off the court stuff? Does that factor in at all?” asked Ferrone, to which Beverley seemed somewhat confused. “I really don’t know a lot of off the court stuff about Karl,” said Beverley. “He got a 13-year-old pregnant,” said Ferrone, which left Beverley visibly shocked, mouth agape, and making the gesture to ask for a timeout.
Ferrone attempted to keep the team building going, while Beverley sat there speechless. “When you said 13-year-old pregnant, was he 16?” Bev asked. “I think he was a grown-up… He was 20, and he got a 13-year-old pregnant, that doesn’t seem cool to me,” said Ferrone. “But yeah, you could draft him if you want.”
Beverley struggled to maintain his composure, went silent for a moment and kept shaking his head in disbelief. “Yeah, I ain’t drafting him,” he said. “Wow. … Bro, I am… That threw me the fuck off. Is this true, and this is documented?!” Ferrone confirmed that the case is well-documented and true. “I don’t even know this, I didn’t know this at all,” said Beverley, who still appeared shocked at what he was hearing. “Oh shit.”
While Malone is often considered one of the best power forwards in the history of the league, his time in the NBA has been marred by the incredibly worrisome story. As reported by The Globe in 1998, Malone was named as a defendant in two paternity lawsuits after he got his start in the NBA in the ’80s. He was found to have welcomed twins with Bonita Ford when they were both 17 years old, and one child with Gloria Ford, who was 13 when she gave birth to future NFL player Demetress Bell. At the time Ford gave birth, Malone was 20.
But hey, it’s a good reminder that you never really know what someone’s past is like. It’s wild how things can come out of the woodwork like that. Definitely makes you think twice about putting someone on a pedestal, that’s for sure.
