NYPD Detective Alicia Stone, 40, died in Colombia one week after undergoing a Brazilian butt lift and liposuction. The 40-year-old and a mother of three traveled to Cali on October 16 for the procedure, hoping to return home after a short recovery.
Stone served for more than 13 years in the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau and was known among colleagues as dedicated, compassionate, and sharp-minded. Her sudden death has shocked both her department and family.
According to local reports, Stone began recovering at a hotel after surgery. She was found unresponsive in her hotel room and rushed to the Fundación Valle del Lili Hospital, where medical staff pronounced her death from an “unspecified cardiac arrest.”
Her husband, Michael Stone, says she appeared “perfectly fine” before surgery and is demanding transparency. “I don’t have the facts, and that’s what I need, the facts of what happened,” he said.
Post-operative sources say Alicia had been taking anticoagulants and pain medication while recovering at the hotel. Colombian authorities and U.S. consular officials are involved in the investigation.
Her death highlights growing concerns over medical tourism, particularly elective cosmetic procedures performed abroad. Health experts warn that cost savings can come with significant risk, especially when post-surgical care is inconsistent.
