A few days after their teammate, who is currently charged with attempted murder, allegedly stabbed them, two UAB football players were discharged from the hospital.
Speaking to the media on Monday afternoon, Blazers interim head coach Alex Mortensen—who took over after Trent Dilfer was dismissed in October—shared the positive news.
The coach stated:
“I’ve had the opportunity to sit with our injured players and their families, and they are okay with me telling you that they have left the hospital and are recovering,”
“They appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers.”
According to court records, the injured players are defensive linemen Josh Underwood, a rookie, and JaSire Peterson, a redshirt sophomore.
For the alleged on-campus confrontation, Daniel Mincey, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman who stands 6’3″ and weighs 315 pounds, was arrested and charged with both attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Mortensen gave an update on his injured players and expressed gratitude to the first responders, trainers, and medical staff for their handling of the situation. The stabbing’s specifics, including any possible motive, are yet unknown.
Just hours after the stabbing, the Blazers decided to play USF on Saturday despite the violent incident involving three UAB players. They were defeated 48-18.
