Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland, a second-year NFL player, has died. He was 24.
The Cowboys announced Kneeland’s death on Thursday morning, stating that he “tragically passed away this morning.” The team offered its thoughts and prayers to his family and girlfriend, Catalina.
No details on the cause of death were immediately provided. The team’s brief statement did not offer any specifics, nor did a statement released by his agent, Jonathan Perzley, who confirmed the death and asked for privacy for the player’s loved ones. The absence of an immediate cause has led to speculation online, which is common in such sudden and high-profile deaths. However, official sources have not confirmed any details regarding how Kneeland died.
Kneeland, a former Western Michigan standout, was a second-round draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. His death comes just days after he recorded his first career touchdown in the Cowboys’ loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night, recovering a blocked punt in the end zone.
He appeared in all 18 games of his NFL career, making four starts. The team is currently on a bye week.
“I am shattered to confirm that my client and dearest friend Marshawn Kneeland passed away last night,” Perzley said in a statement. “To lose someone with his talent, spirit, and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words. My heart aches for his family, his teammates, and everyone who loved him.”
TMZ Sports is now reporting independently that Kneeland took his own life.
The girlfriend said Kneeland was armed and had a history of mental issues … and she was quoted saying he would “end it all.”
The dispatch also stated the NFL called Plano PD regarding one of its players … stating the “subject is texting his family goodbye.”
This is a very sad story. Please, if you’re going through a tough time, reach out to someone.
