Stuart Scott’s Legacy Will Be Featured in Upcoming “30 for 30” Documentary

The legacy of late “SportsCenter” anchor Stuart Scott will be the subject of an upcoming “30 for 30” documentary, ESPN announced Thursday.

Titled “Boo-Yah! A Portrait of Stuart Scott,” the film is set to premiere Dec. 10 at 9 p.m. EST on ESPN and the ESPN App.

Directed by Andre Gaines, the documentary examines Scott’s rise from local television in North Carolina to becoming one of the most influential voices in sports media. Scott, who died of cancer in 2015 at age 49, is widely credited with infusing hip-hop culture and a distinct vernacular into mainstream sports broadcasting.

Cultural Impact

“Stuart Scott didn’t just change sports journalism — he changed culture,” Gaines said in a statement. “He made millions of people feel seen at a time when few voices like his were given the mic.”

The film traces how Scott’s unapologetic style—blending sharp analysis with pop culture references—shifted the tone of sports media and paved the way for a new generation of broadcasters.

Personal Footage and Tributes

The documentary draws on never-before-seen archival footage, including home videos shot by Scott himself, to provide an intimate look at his life off-camera.

“Boo-Yah!” also features interviews with a wide range of colleagues, friends and cultural figures. Notable appearances include Robin Roberts, Charles Barkley, Jay Harris, Common, and Scott’s daughters, Taelor and Sydni.

V Week Connection

The premiere coincides with ESPN’s 19th annual V Week for Cancer Research. Scott was a prominent advocate for the V Foundation, delivering a memorable speech at the 2014 ESPYS shortly before his death where he famously stated, “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.”

The project is executive produced by ESPN Films, Run & Shoot Filmworks and Cinemation Studios. Following its broadcast debut, the documentary will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
