Ohio Head Coach Brian Smith Fired For Having Affair With Student

Ohio University abruptly fired head football coach Brian Smith on Wednesday, ending his first season in charge after an administrative review found “serious professional misconduct,” including an inappropriate relationship with an undergraduate student and violations of university policy.

Smith, 45, who led the Bobcats to an 8-4 record this season and had been on indefinite administrative leave since Dec. 1, was dismissed for cause, a designation that allows the university to terminate his contract without paying the buyout it would owe if he were let go without cause. An interim coach will lead the team in its upcoming Frisco Bowl appearance.

In letters obtained by Front Office Sports, Ohio’s president cited multiple reasons for Smith’s firing, including his participation in extramarital affairs, one of which was with an undergraduate student; repeated use of alcohol in his office in violation of university policy; and a public appearance in which he appeared intoxicated. Smith acknowledged the relationship, which reportedly lasted four months, after his separation from his wife, but his attorney disputed that the conduct violated university rules.

  • “Participation in extramarital affairs, including one with an undergraduate student, to which you have admitted.”
  • “Repeated use of alcohol in your office, in violation of university policy.”
  • “A public appearance during which you smelled strongly of alcohol and were intoxicated in your demeanor.”

University officials have said Smith’s actions reflected unfavorably on the institution and breached the terms of his employment agreement. The move comes amid heightened scrutiny on conduct standards for college athletics personnel nationwide.

Smith’s attorney has vowed to contest the termination, arguing that the allegations do not justify firing him for cause and that no formal policy prohibits the relationship in question. Meanwhile, Ohio University has already begun a national search for a permanent head coach as the Bobcats prepare for postseason play.
