Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore remained in police custody Thursday as prosecutors weighed potential charges following his arrest in connection with an alleged assault of his assistant Paige Shiver.
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office told ESPN that no decision on criminal charges was expected Thursday. Consequently, Moore was not scheduled to be arraigned that day, though police have indicated a court appearance could occur as early as Friday.
“The matter involving Mr. Moore remains under active investigation by law enforcement, and as a result, we do not expect charging decisions or an arraignment today,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. “Mr. Moore remains in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail.”
Moore, 39, was booked into the jail Wednesday night, just hours after the University of Michigan fired him for cause. The university cited “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member that violated school policy.
Pittsfield Township police said officers took a suspect into custody Wednesday afternoon following reports of an assault at a residence near Ann Arbor. While authorities have not released the name of the victim or specific details of the allegation to protect the integrity of the investigation, they confirmed the incident did not appear to be random.
Moore was initially detained by police in nearby Saline, Michigan, before being transferred to Pittsfield Township authorities.
The second-year head coach’s sudden termination and subsequent arrest have thrown the Michigan football program into turmoil. Athletic Director Warde Manuel announced the firing Wednesday, stating the university maintains “zero tolerance” for the conduct discovered during an internal investigation.
Moore had led the Wolverines to a 9-3 record this season after taking over the program permanently in January 2024. The university has not named an interim coach.
Moore or Moore’s attorneys are expected to release as statement after his arraignment on Friday.
