R&B star Trey Songz was arrested and charged with assault after allegedly punching a nightclub employee in the face during an early-morning tantrum at a Times Square venue, prosecutors said, marking the latest in a string of legal troubles for the singer.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Dec. 6 at Dramma Night Club, where Songz — whose real name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson — became “needlessly irate” upon being informed the club was closing, according to court documents. The 41-year-old artist allegedly struck the worker, causing swelling and substantial pain, leading to charges of third-degree assault and second-degree mischief — both misdemeanors. Songz, a regular at the club known for hits like “Bottoms Up” and “Na Na,” was with friends at the time, though no other arrests were reported.
Songz appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court later that day, wearing a black face mask, and was granted supervised release despite his history of legal issues. The judge issued an order of protection for the employee, prohibiting contact, and set the next court date for Feb. 18. When approached by photographers outside the courthouse, Songz declined to comment, simply saying, “Have a good night, brother.” Representatives for the singer did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The arrest adds to a lengthy rap sheet for Songz, who has faced multiple allegations of violence and sexual misconduct over the years. In 2016, he was charged with aggravated assault following an onstage meltdown in Detroit, later pleading to disturbing the peace and serving 18 months’ probation. Two years later, he was accused of striking a woman at an NBA All-Star event, leading to a restraining order and dropped felony charges. More recently, Songz was arrested in 2021 after a brawl with a police officer at a Kansas City Chiefs game; cleared in a 2022 sexual assault investigation; settled a 2022 rape lawsuit; and faces a pending 2023 suit for allegedly groping two women at a party. Earlier this year, in July, he was investigated for allegedly assaulting a cameraman outside a New York nightclub, hospitalizing the man with a fractured eye socket.
As the case proceeds, Songz — often dubbed “Mr. Steal Your Girl” — continues to navigate a career shadowed by controversy, with no immediate word on how the charges might impact upcoming projects or performances.
