Alabama men’s basketball brought Nate Oats’ wife back onto the staff Thursday, hiring Alex Accetta as director of program relations five weeks after the couple married and four years after she left the same program for the NBA.
The official announcement, posted by the program on X, listed two staff moves heading into the 2026-27 season: Accetta’s return and the promotion of Josh Pierre from director of operations to director of player development. Accetta will not report to Oats. The university said she reports to Shane Lyons, the executive deputy athletic director, chief operating officer and men’s basketball sport administrator.
“Alex has an extensive background and proven success in this space at both the collegiate and professional levels,” Lyons said in a statement. “With her previous experience, she has a strong understanding of our program and what it takes to effectively operate at the highest competitive levels. She returns to Alabama basketball after four seasons with the NBA Dallas Mavericks, and we expect her professional franchise experience and insights to continue to advance all we do.”

The hire closes a circle that has followed Oats since April, when the 51-year-old coach casually confirmed on SiriusXM that he was engaged to Accetta, then 30, a former Alabama operations staffer. They married July 26. Athletic director Greg Byrne and several current and former Crimson Tide staff members attended. Alabama’s official staff bio for Accetta now lists Oats as her spouse.
The sequence is what turned a routine staff note into national copy. Accetta worked on the men’s basketball staff while Oats was still married to Crystal Oats, a cancer survivor and his wife of 26 years. Accetta left Tuscaloosa in 2022. The Oatses divorced quietly in 2023. The engagement became public in 2026. The wedding followed in July. The rehire arrived Thursday. That timeline not any public admission about when the relationship began — is what produced the charge that Oats left his wife for a staffer and then brought her back.
Alabama did not address that framing in Thursday’s release.
Accetta, a Dallas native and 2017 Alabama graduate, first joined the men’s basketball program in 2015 as a student assistant under then-coach Avery Johnson. After graduation she became operations coordinator. Oats arrived from Buffalo in March 2019 and kept her on staff. She was promoted to director of basketball operations after the 2020-21 season, a year Alabama won the SEC regular-season and tournament titles.
In that job she oversaw travel and logistics, on-campus recruiting visits, ticket requests for coaches, staff and recruits, and game-day needs for staff and guests. University bios from her first stint noted she was one of a small number of women then serving in a coach or support-staff role on a major-conference men’s basketball team. She also handled day-to-day scheduling for the team and for Oats.
She left after the 2021-22 season for guest experience and business operations with the Dallas Mavericks, where she spent four seasons directing VIP and executive hospitality — ownership groups, league executives, corporate partners and high-profile guests — and serving as a liaison between the franchise and American Airlines Center. Before Alabama, she worked from 2010-13 as director of operations for the Nancy Lieberman Charities.
The new title, director of program relations, is not the old director of operations job. Pierre held that operations seat for four seasons and is moving into player development. Accetta’s portfolio, as described by the university, sits closer to external relations, hospitality and program-facing logistics than to on-court coaching. The reporting line through Lyons, rather than through Oats, is the structure Alabama is using to separate the marriage from the org chart.
Oats married Crystal in 1997 while he was an assistant at Maranatha Baptist University. They have three daughters: Lexie, Jocelyn and Brielle. Crystal, a nurse from Jackson, Mississippi, was diagnosed in 2015 with double-hit lymphoma, an aggressive cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and was declared in remission in 2016. Oats has spoken publicly in past years about that period and about remaining in the job with her encouragement.
The divorce in 2023 was not announced by the university or by Oats at the time. It became widely known only after the April 2026 radio appearance in which he referred to Accetta as “my fiancée now, she was my girlfriend at the time” while recounting a Knicks playoff game they attended at Madison Square Garden. Jocelyn later posted wedding photos. Crystal has not issued a public statement in the coverage of the engagement, the wedding or Thursday’s hire.
