Former CNN anchor Don Lemon unleashed a scathing critique of ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith on Instagram Friday, labeling him an “Uncle Tom” and accusing him of selling out to conservative audiences while disparaging the Black community.
In a video reel posted to his verified account, Lemon, 59, expressed disappointment in Smith, 58, for venturing into political commentary on topics he allegedly lacks expertise in. “Let’s talk about Stephen A. Smith… ” read the caption accompanying the post. During the clip, part of “The Don Lemon Show,” Lemon elaborated, calling Smith “a disappointment” who “goes off and talks about sh-t that he has no idea about.”
Lemon specifically criticized Smith for “cozying up” to right-wing figures like Megyn Kelly and making excuses for white people while taking shots at Black individuals, including frequent targets like Serena Williams and Vice President Kamala Harris.
“He’s one of those Black people that white people think Black people like and we don’t. Stephen A. Smith does not represent us,” Lemon stated.
He further accused Smith of appeasing a white conservative audience at the expense of his own community.
The rant echoes similar criticisms from others, including former MSNBC host Joy Reid, who recently called out Smith for downplaying her achievements while boasting about his own lucrative ESPN contract. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, commented on Lemon’s post to support his views, highlighting Smith’s repeated attacks on her.
Smith, known for his bombastic style on “First Take,” has not publicly responded to Lemon’s comments as of Saturday. The ESPN star has faced backlash in the past for political takes.
The post has sparked divided reactions online, with some praising Lemon for holding Smith accountable and others defending Smith’s right to diverse opinions. Lemon’s show streams daily, covering hot topics in news and culture.
