Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza has officially decided he has seen enough college football.
The young star is skipping his final college season and entering the NFL Draft. Yes, he packed his bags early. And no, he did not ask the fans how they felt about it.
The announcement dropped and instantly caused chaos. Indiana fans were still warming up to the idea of one more season, Mendoza clearly was not. He looked at the calendar, looked at his draft stock, and said, “I’m good.”
Mendoza is an overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft by the Las Vegas Raiders.
“Let’s get to work,” Mendoza wrote on his Instagram account. “I’m humbled to announce that I am officially declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft!”
Raiders majority owner Mark Davis, minority owner Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek were on Indiana’s sideline before the No. 1 Hoosiers’ 27-21 victory against No. 10 Miami in the CFP National Championship Presented by AT&T at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Monday.
Oregon quarterback Dante Moore was also considered a potential No. 1 pick, but he opted to return to the Ducks for one more college season.
If the Raiders select Mendoza first in the draft, which will be held April 23-25 in Pittsburgh, he would become only the third player to win the Heisman Trophy and a national championship and become the No. 1 pick in the draft in the same 12-month window.
Of course, the NFL is a different beast. The windows are smaller, the hits are harder, the patience is thinner and there are no sympathy snaps on Sundays. Mendoza will learn that fast.
For Indiana, this hurts. Losing a starting quarterback is never fun and losing one early stings even more.
For Mendoza, the gamble is clear. He is betting on himself, he is betting that teams will take a chance and he is betting that skipping one more college season will pay off.
Will it work? Nobody knows yet. That is the fun part. The draft is unpredictable and careers change fast.
One thing is certain though, Fernando Mendoza did not hesitate. He made his move. Now the football world waits to see if it was genius or just bold confidence. All the best!
