A high school athletic trainer in Illinois is facing serious charges after authorities accused her of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Christina G. Payton, 27, was arrested after allegations surfaced involving a 17-year-old student at Indian Creek High School in Shabbona, Illinois. According to reports, Payton allegedly sent sexually explicit photos of herself to the student in early April.
And no, this is not the kind of “relationship” anyone expects to hear about between a school employee and a teenager.
Authorities described the situation as an “inappropriate relationship.” The allegations have now turned what might have been an ordinary school story into a criminal case.
Adults working around teenagers know where the boundaries are. They are not exactly hidden, there is no secret handbook that says, “Please ignore every professional rule you have ever learned.”
Yet authorities say those boundaries were crossed.
The case is now moving through the legal system. Payton is accused of criminal conduct and would now face the law.
Payton was hit with both felony and misdemeanor charges of distributing harmful material to a minor, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The relationship was first reported to cops on June 10, leading to an investigation by Lee County detectives that eventually prompted Payton to turn herself in on Wednesday, officials said.
Indian Creek School District Superintendent Chad Willis told the Shaw Local news outlet that the charges were “deeply concerning and disappointing.”
Payton, of Creston, Ill., was released without bail in accordance with a 2021 state criminal justice reform law that means defendants no longer have to pay money to be released while awaiting trial.
“All charges are merely an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” police added in an online statement.
Payton will now have to deal with the legal process and the allegations against her.
As for everyone else, the lesson is pretty simple.
Adults working with students have boundaries for a reason.
And apparently, some people still need that reminder spelled out in very large letters.
