Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson was assessed a technical foul Tuesday night after she pointed at and yelled toward courtside Indiana Fever fans, who were briefly escorted from their baseline seats and then allowed to return during Game 2 of a WNBA first-round playoff series.
The Fever won 99-89 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, tying the best-of-three series at 1-1. Game 3 is Thursday night in Las Vegas.
The exchange happened with about four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, after Fever wing Sophie Cunningham was called for a foul on Wilson. Broadcast video showed a man in the baseline seats standing, pointing and yelling as Wilson got to her feet. Wilson pointed back, took steps toward the seats and shouted in the fan’s direction before officials and Aces personnel steered her away. Teammate Cheyenne Parker-Tyus pointed out the fan as Wilson was held back.

Officials stopped play to review the foul and Wilson’s interaction with the spectator. Wilson received a technical foul. Kelsey Mitchell missed the resulting free throw.
Two fans — a man and a woman sitting with him — were walked from the baseline seats to loud boos. They returned a few minutes later, with just over three minutes left. The man raised his arms as the crowd cheered, sat down, high-fived nearby fans and greeted mascot Freddy Fever.
A Fever spokesperson said security investigated after a report of a comment directed at a player.
“Following a report of a comment directed toward a player, arena security spoke with the fan involved and witnesses,” the team said. “Security determined there was no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct, the fan was not removed from the arena. We consider the matter closed.”
Amazon Prime analyst LaChina Robinson said during the broadcast that words likely were exchanged and that Wilson’s reaction appeared provoked. What the fan said has not been independently verified. Wilson did not quote the spectator after the game.
Wilson addressed the moment after the loss, saying the fan’s body language — not only any words — crossed a line.
“If I’m just walking, because I just got the foul, I’m chilling, and if I see a man come at me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said it,” Wilson said. “The tone that is unacceptable. You don’t step toward me. You never should step and point at me.”
She said she was frustrated that the fan was allowed back after security concluded he had not broken arena rules.

“And how he gets back in the game because they said he didn’t do anything. Of course he didn’t, and that’s fine,” Wilson said. “But I apologize to my team because I got a tech. … It’s just certain things that I’m just not going to allow anymore because it’s just unacceptable.”
She added: “You can hate me with all your heart. But you don’t know me. But I guarantee you, you will respect me.”
The comments, circulated widely from a postgame interview posted by sports media personality Robin Lundberg, immediately split online reaction. Some viewers said a player should not engage a pointing fan and called the technical deserved. Others said a spectator stepping toward a player and pointing is a security issue regardless of whether the words met the written Fan Code of Conduct. Neither the fan nor arena security provided a public account of the words exchanged.
