Megan Thee Stallion has described her split from NBA star Klay Thompson as “very rough,” saying she felt she was “losing myself” in a relationship that ended after she accused him of cheating and backing away from commitment.
The Grammy-winning rapper, 31, confirmed in April that she had ended the roughly nine-month relationship with Thompson, 36, a four-time NBA champion now with the Dallas Mavericks. In a new InStyle cover story published Wednesday, she offered her most detailed public reflection yet on why it fell apart and what she will no longer accept.
“It was very rough,” Megan told the magazine. “What’s meant for you is always going to work out. And if something is constantly making you feel uncomfortable, just on edge all the time, you probably are not supposed to be there. God will always make you uncomfortable when something is not meant for you.”
She added: “I think I just kept trying to make pieces fit that didn’t belong, trying to fit myself into someone else’s life. I was losing myself a little bit. I am now in the space of finding me again.”
The comments come nearly five months after she first made the split public in an unusually blunt Instagram Story on April 25.
“Cheating, had me around your whole family playing house… got ‘cold feet,’” she wrote. “Holding you down through all your HORRIBLE mood swings and treatment towards me during your basketball season now you don’t know if you can be ‘monogamous’???? B—- I need a REAL break after this one .. bye yall.”
In the InStyle interview Megan was explicit about what she will require next.
“I cannot be disrespected. I cannot be a person who is not gonna be me. I cannot not go to work. I’m going to be Megan Thee Stallion. … You will not disrespect me. And you will be thankful. Period.”
She said she will not “take the backseat” or be minimized. Any future partner, she said, must accept that she is “her own person” and “her own boss” who will not stay home “24/7.”
“I will have a partner. I will be equals with my partner,” she said. “If you can’t take that, we just gotta respectfully go our separate ways.”
The breakup also coincided with professional changes. Shortly after the April announcement she shortened her limited Broadway run in “Moulin Rouge!” She has described the months since as feeling as if she had been “put through the washing machine and the dryer with tins, shovels and a cactus.”
Thompson, who spent more than a decade with the Golden State Warriors before signing with Dallas, has continued playing without publicly addressing the relationship or the accusations. WNBA player Lexie Brown, whose name briefly circulated in speculation after the split, denied any involvement.
Megan has not announced a new relationship. In the latest interview she framed the episode as a lesson in self-preservation rather than a search for immediate replacement.
“Whoever dates me is gonna have to just understand, like, she is her own person,” she said. “I cannot be minimized.”
