There has been several reports that when police arrived at the scene of the accident that killed Jerry Brown, Josh Brent the person responsible for the crash was pulling Brown from the burning vehicle.
While most have admonished Brent for drinking and driving, no one at the time questioned his actions after the crash. That probably will change if you believe this eyewitness account from Stacee McWilliams. McWilliams spoke to Dallas Morning News about what happened after she arrived on the scene and before the police arrived. Profootballtalk.com provides us with some disturbing quotes from her.
McWilliams arrived seeing Brent in the street and didn’t realize there was another passenger still in the car. McWilliams then described hearing Brown call out from the vehicle for help with Brent allegedly unwilling to tend to his friend and teammate.
“Josh looked at me and he said ‘(Brown) won’t get out of the car,’” McWilliams said. “And I said ‘well you can’t just leave him in there and let him die, you’ve got to help him. Go get him.’ I commended him several times and Josh looked at me again and he said ‘he won’t get out of the car’ and I told him ‘you can’t stand here and watch him die. You’ve got to get him out.’ He still didn’t move so I thought he wasn’t going to help at all.”
McWilliams said as she returned to her car to retrieve her cell phone, Brent finally did tend to Brown and pulled him from the burning wreckage.
“I want people to understand that Josh Brent is not a hero,” McWilliams said. “I keep hearing reports of how he was there to pull his friend from the fire but he had to be coerced and pushed and begged and pleaded to get his friend out of the fire and when he pulled him out, he just left him in the street. He didn’t tell him ‘hang in there, help is on the way.’ Nothing. He just left him there and I want the magnitude of that to be understood.”
Those are pretty powerful words. I hope the way she describe it isn’t true and there is an explanation for Brent’s actions. Brent has been invited to Brown’s funeral and has the support of Brown’s family, but you have to wonder after reading this will it change their feelings about Brent?
Brent hasn’t spoken to anyone publicly, but there are some serious questions he needs to address.
