I just don’t believe head trauma causes you to shot your girlfriend 9 times and then kill yourself, but that is what the mother of Jovan Belcher says in her lawsuit.
Belcher, who killed longtime girlfriend Kasandra Perkins in the couple’s Kansas City home last December, then drove to the Chiefs’ training facility and killed himself, had played for the Chiefs for four years.
Belcher’s mother, Cheryl Shepherd, was in the couple’s home on Dec. 1, 2012 when Belcher, 25, murdered Perkins. So was the couple’s infant daughter.
The suit alleges that Belcher was exposed to “repetitive head trauma” and “suffered multiple concussive and subconcussive blows to the head which caused or contributed to cause a a constellation of neurologic/brain harms, including post concussion syndrome … and traumatic brain injuries, such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).”
According to the suit, former Chiefs general manger Scott Pioli and other Chiefs officials “engaged in mental abuse to ‘motivate’” Belcher to play through his injuries. The suit alleges that Belcher was told “he was just an accident, and they would get rid of him” — treatment the suit labels “constant bullying pressure and stress” that, coupled with Belcher’s concussion issues, “caused or contributed to cause (him) to become insane.”
I believe that is a cop out. NFL, college and high school players deal with 1000 of concussions a year, how many have killed their girlfriend in cold blood?
I don’t know if Belcher’s mom is in denial or just wants money, but this isn’t the way to handle it.
