The Oral Roberts men’s basketball team will have to forfeit two Southland Conference games due to a violation of NCAA rules.
Via CBS Sports:
Bylaw 20.9.8.1 in the NCAA rulebook declares that “an institution may schedule and play not more than four basketball games, including any contest (e.g., scrimmage, exhibition), in an academic year against institutions that are not members of Division I (Revised: 3/1/12).”
In 2013-14, 7-8 ORU has played regular-season games against Cameron College and Dallas Baptist, in addition to exhibitions vs. Northwood and Rogers State. Where ORU gets dinged is in the details. Due to transitional D-I schools Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word, they don’t fully count as a D-I opponent, although they are first-year members of the Southland.
This is a rather unfortunate situation as the two forfeits will count as regular season losses and affect the Golden Eagles seeding in the Southland Conference Tournament. Oral Roberts is currently 7-8.
