ESPN is announcing that Chip Kelly has just signed a multi-year deal to be the network’s in studio college football analyst. Chip has spent the last four years in the NFL, this past season as head coach of the 49ers and the three previous as the Eagles head man. Chip is the former head coach for the University of Oregon and is widely considered as an offensive innovator in the game.
Chip enjoyed tremendous success in college and very early in Philadelphia but that success was not sustainable. No doubt the bloom off his rose faded a bit and not many teams were willing to give him another head coaching job.
Over the last 30 years, I have experienced football from one perspective — as a coach. Working in television will allow me to see the game from a different angle; simultaneously, I’ll provide viewers an insight to the mindset of a coach and team while offering alternative views of various situations.
Chip is doing what many have done before him. Spend some time still connected to the game but away from the day to day grind to gain perspective, and get paid. Kelly still has three years left on the four year deal he signed with the 49ers.
