Shams reported that Kawhi will be signing a 3-Year $103 million contract with Clippers. The third year is a player option that he is 100% opting out of, so it is essentially a two year deal.
This works for Kawhi for a couple reasons. When the deal is up he will have 10 years of service in the league which will allow him to get a massive supermax contract if he stays with Clippers.
Also, it gives him the opportunity to hit Free Agency the same time as Paul Geroge in 2021.
Once you leave your original team, you might as well keep the flexibility of being free as much as possible. This is something both LeBron and Kevin Durant have done in the past.
