The battle for Middleweight supremacy is here. It’s fight week for Golovkin v Jacobs and BSO will be your source for all the activities leading up to and including Saturday night’s fight. At Monday’s press conference it was the usual pomp and circumstance. The officials from Madison Square Garden and the promoters did the usual. As well as the managers from each side saying “this was ‘insert fighter’s name’ best training camp and we are really looking forward to a historic night.” But the atmosphere while very respectful between the two sides, seemed down right friendly which seemed odd ahead of a huge title fight.
Part of the reason for this and it should not be overlooked is that Golovkin and Jacobs are widely recognized as good guys in the sport. Professionals that go about their business the right way and are highly decorated. Plus, Jacobs has fought an overcome a rare form of bone cancer to return to the ring. No doubt a tremendous source of inspiration and those within the boxing community want the best for him. But typically ahead of a major title fight the atmosphere is a bit more contentious.
Experts predict GGG will beat Jacobs by KO. Citing the super middleweight champion’s precise and severe punching power. Noting that Jacobs has been KO’d before. Still, some say despite GGG holding the WBC, IBF, IBO, and WBA (Super) titles he hasn’t fought anyone as tough as Danny Jacobs. If this “friendly” atmosphere continues will GGG relax just a bit? Will he be looking ahead to a potential fight with Canelo?
Boxing fans and experts know fights can turn on the slightest things. A momentary lapse in focus, briefly letting your guard down, etc. There is nothing wrong with showing respect for your opponent but in the week leading up to the fight there is no room for platitudes and “friendly” atmosphere. Respect your opponent but your mindset should be to seek and destroy. We will see how the atmosphere and mood from both camps evolves over the course of the week.
