The news of the $49-billion AT&T buyout of satellite TV conglomerate, DirecTV, took social media by storm over the weekend, but there seems to be a minor kink that hasn’t been resolved yet. In AT&T’s filing with the SEC, there is room for AT&T to back out of the merger if DirecTV is unable to secure another long-term agreement with NFL Sunday Ticket.
DirecTV’s contract with NFL Sunday Ticket comes to an end after the 2014 season is over. Both sides extended their exclusive negotiating period after the 2o13 season was over, but there still hasn’t been any agreement. AT&T could chose to continue with the buyout even if NFL Sunday Ticket doesn’t come with the package, but sports fans know that the appeal of DirecTV has always pointed toward their exclusivity with the NFL.
Nothing is set in stone yet, so now it’s just a wait and see game.
