Iona Recruit Michael Haynes Shot To Death

Sad when instead of reporting him graduating from college, we have to report that Michael Haynes, 22, died from gun shot wounds late Thursday afternoon near his Chicago home. Haynes was pronounced dead at MetroSouth Medical Center inBlue Island around 6:25pm.  His cousin Kandice Blouin was quoted saying what happened:

“Was shot dead while trying to break up a fight over a stolen necklace,” Blouin said. “He was an innocent victim, very loved by everybody.”

The Sun Times further reported from the police:

“Shot in the wrist, chest and lower back about 5:10 p.m. in the 11600 block of South Vincennes Avenue.”

Formerly a student at Indian Hills Community College, standing 6’7 at forward, he averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds last season and was quoted by Tim Floyd in 2010 as:

“Great competitor, great rebounder. I have not seen a guy play as hard as Mike in a long, long time.”

I hope his family and friends can get through this difficult time, with the beautiful memories Im sure Michael left on this earth. Its sad when young people never live to reach their full potential and are gunned down way before their time.

Condolences and Prayers are with his family and friends at this time.
