There is a fine line between being a religion and a cult.
A cult is defined as a new religious movement or other group whose beliefs or practices are considered abnormal or bizarre. In laymen terms anything that someone thinks is a little odd can be considered a cult.
Ricky Williams has always been considered a little odd, so it isn’t surprising that his new foundation and their teachings are coming under some scrutiny.
Alex Dunlap of The Austin Chronicle sat down and interviewed former NFL running back Ricky Williams, , Gary Douglas, and Dr. Dain Heer to talk about Ricky’s foundation, Access Consciousness.
“Some call Access a movement, some call it a cult,” wrote Dunlap. ”In performing a simple Internet search, it is not hard to find scathing remarks regarding their methodologies, some from individuals claiming real-life experience within the culture. Their teachings are based in freedom from judgment in our conscious experiences. This idea manifests itself in many ways, including emphasis on sexual freedom. Douglas’ business partner is Dr. Dain Heer.”
Williams talked about his view of Access Consciousness.
“The difference I have found with Access is, it’s really just an energy … it’s that place where you’re just like ‘OK, there’s got to be something better than this,’ and you start to ask questions and things show up in a different way.”
Both Douglas and Heer explained how they tried to convince Williams to get players within the NFL to buy into their beliefs of healing.
“She goes to the hospital the next day, to her surgeon that she knew personally, and the guy says, after looking at the X-rays, he goes, ‘My God! What happened? It looks like somebody already set this’”

As long as your beliefs or teachings aren’t hurting anyone, then I think people should respect that. I consider something a cult when people become so wrapped up in it, that they are harming themselves, children and etc.
This seems harmless, so we will just chalk it up to Ricky being Ricky.
