Don’t fool yourself there are gay athletes in every single sport. So, while Cruz is the first openly gay boxer he isn’t the only one.
In my mind your sexual orientation means nothing in sports.
Can you play (or box in this case) or not? Cruz is a decent boxer 18-2-1 fighting int he featherweight division, so if anything he is debunking the stereotype that gay men aren’t tough.
Gay or not, you have to be a grown man to box, it isn’t the type of sport you can fake being tough.
No real reason why Cruz decided to come out besides him wanting to get it off his chest , but here was his quote.
“I’ve been fighting for more than 24 years and as I continue my ascendant career, I want to be true to myself,” Cruz said in the statement. “I want to try to be the best role model I can be for kids who might look into boxing as a sport and a professional career. I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud gay man.”
