The New York Giants short of a miracle will not make the playoffs this season after winning a Super Bowl in 2012. Most teams when they miss the playoffs tend to try to reload.
Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora probably will not be back with the team after going through several different contract issues over the past four seasons.
Umenyiora understands their may be change, but according to the Star-Ledger, if they do make changes, Umenyiora feels they should just totally start over.
“Is there a high probability that I’m going to be playing somewhere else? I would say there is a high probability, and that’s just me being honest,” Umenyiora said on a conference call with reporters today. “But I’m not certain of what’s going to happen. Anything can happen; we can get in the playoffs. Anything is possible. But is there a high probability that I’m going to be playing somewhere else? Yes, and I think everybody knows that. We’re not going to kid ourselves.”
“Where are they going to make the changes is the question,” Umenyiora said. “There is no individual, there is no aspect of the team this year that stood out. People want to just talk about the pass rush. OK, well maybe we didn’t get 50 sacks like we did last year, but was the offense playing well? Was the special teams playing (well)? Like where? There was nowhere that was up to par, that was up to the standard that we set last year. So if they’re going to be making changes, it has to be wholesale changes, it has to be changes for everybody, because nobody played above average this year.”
“I don’t control a lot of things that go out there on the football field,” he said. “There are games this year where if the ball would have bounced differently, (if) we would have had a little bit more coverage in certain situations … I would have ended up with 12 or 14 sacks. But it didn’t happen like that. It’s just one of those situations. I think what I’ve put on tape has been good for all the teams to see, and we’re just going to go from there.”
I’m not sure how much change the Giants can make in a year. The obvious issues are on the defensive end. The Giants can score and play offense with the best of them.
Their defense is another thing. The Giants need to get younger up front, and definitely need some help in the secondary.
