The shocking coaching dismissal of Black Monday was definitely the Chicago Bears firing head coach Lovie Smith, even after leading the team to a 10-6 record.
Lovie Smith is an excellent defensive coach who will rebound and find a coordinator or possible head coaching job shortly. Smiths downfall and reason he is unemployed this morning is because he miss the playoffs 5 of the past 6 years, and his teams offensive output.
Pro Football Talk is reporting that the main factor in Bears GM Phil Emery firing Smith was his lack of and inability to build a strong offense.
“Our No. 1 goal always has to be to win championships, and to win championships we have to be in contention on a consistent basis, and to be in contention we have to make the playoffs on a consistent basis. We’ve had defensive excellence, but during the course of coach Smith’s years here we’ve had one offense that was ranked in the top 15.”
Emery hinted at Smiths inability to have a strong offense, even after switching coordinators and quarterbacks at different times during his tenure.
