Things maybe getting a little hot in the kitchen for Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo following a rocky debut, but the temperature may be just right for Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael. Carmichael took advantage his opportunity to handle the Saints play-calling duties while Sean Payton was suspended this past season, and now he is reportedly (via Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com) getting an opportunity to interview with Bears GM Phil Emery for what may arguably be the NFL’s best available coaching position.
Emery made it clear that Chicago is looking to improve on offense, and Carmichael may be a name to keep an eye on in connection to this job given his experience in New Orleans assisting Sean Payton with game-planning before taking over play-calling duties this year.
The Bears remind me a little bit of the 2001 Bucs after they let Tony Dungy go. Lovie Smith built a great defense, and Jay Cutler is a top-15 quarterback. Whoever gets this job could compete for a title very soon. Maybe Pete Carmichael could be Chicago’s Jon Gruden.
Then again, they could always reach out to the real “Chucky”.
