Deadspin broke open the story on the leaked financial documents with the Carolina Panther’s substantial profits listed on them.
This comes at a time when the Panthers under owner Jerry Richardson have launched a campaign to get public funding to upgrade their nearly 20-year-old stadium. After crying broke in the 2011 season and spearheading the lockout to rally owners against the players, the Panthers made a total of $78.7 million. Did I mention they only went 2-14 during that season, too.
The season following the lockout they pocketed an extra $33.3 million. The documents bring to life the reality of the ‘cash cow’ that truly is the NFL–even the terrible teams make mega profits. The Panther cried broke while knowing all too well they were making astronomical profits in relation to their on the field performance.
It’s stories like this that make you angry again about the lockout, and the greed of the owners despite a record breaking year in profits.
