I find it sad that a lot of these young men don’t seem to grasp the concept of how hurtful this word was and is to an older generation.
I get that in 2014, for a lot of black people saying wassup my nigga is basically like hello, but that doesn’t change that fact that a lot of people are uncomfortable when it is being said around them. Not just white people, but black people as well.
I have a really simple rule, if you walked into your place a business and starting saying wassup my nigga to all your co-workers and in ear shot of your boss, would that be accepted in most workplaces? So, why should it be accepted in the NFL?
Here is what Sherman had to say courtesy of PFT.com.
“It’s an atrocious idea,” said Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman. “It’s almost racist, to me. It’s weird they’re targeting one specific word. Why wouldn’t all curse words be banned then?”
Sherman said the N-word is commonly used among NFL players.
“It’s in the locker room and on the field at all times,” Sherman said. “I hear it almost every series out there on the field.”
Sherman is incorrect in thinking that it is just that word that would be banned, it would be all slurs and abusive language. I think someone as creative as Sherman is with his speech would be able to live without dropping N-Bombs while on the field.
To say it is almost racist to try to eliminate a word as derogatory as nigger, shows you that there is a generational disconnect that really needs to be addressed within the black community.
