The NFL preseason has been littered with penalty flags like never before. Most of the calls have come from illegal contact or pass interference penalties. In the finger pointing game, many people seem to want to place the blame squarely on the shoulders on the Seattle Seahawks aka the Legion of Boom. Oddly enough, the Seahawks are the only team that hasn’t been flagged for defensive holding in the preseason. Now the question is what is to blame, and Seahawks CB Richard Sherman thinks he has an idea. Sherman thinks that fantasy football is the reason for what many consider phantom penalties during the preseason.
“When the fantasy football numbers need to be what they need to be, then the league needs to do what it needs to do to get it done. This is a money-driven league, so whatever sells the tickets is gonna sell the tickets.”
Forbes Magazine estimated that fantasy football generated approximately $70 billion in revenue annually, but the NFL doesn’t actually make money from fantasy leagues. I’m not too sure how the NFL would benefit financially from better fantasy football scores.
