The Bulldogs from Mississippi State are on top of the polls for the first time in school history after an impressive win over Auburn in Starkville. MSU leap frogs Florida State for the top spot after three straight wins ranked opponents despite the Noles being undefeated as well. The interesting part about one of the polls is that Florida State actually received more first place votes and still is ranked 2nd behind Mississippi State.
Mississippi State is the best college football team in the country.
That’s what the voters of the AP and coaches polls say, anyway. Voters were impressed enough by the Bulldogs’ 38-23 over Auburn on Saturday that they voted them into first place over Florida State, who had a relatively easy time with Syracuse. What’s strange, though, is that Florida State actually received more first-place votes (31-26 than the Bulldogs), and odds are this is due to some voters putting Ole Miss ahead of the Seminoles as well. Mississippi State received 45 first-place votes in the AP poll.
It’s hard to blame voters for feeling that way, as Mississippi State now has wins over LSU, Texas A&M and Auburn on its resume, while Ole Miss has beaten Alabama and A&M as well.
I said last night that I think Mississippi State deserves to be ranked #1 and I also think that Ole Miss should be ranked #2. While I think Florida State is a good football team they haven’t looked nearly as dominant as they did in 2013. MSU has earned the right to be where they are ranked. Did anyone think the Egg Bowl would carry playoff ramifications coming into the season? I certainly didn’t.
